they were superstitious and believed that disease was spread through natural sex proliferation
they were greedy and wanted to pass on their family line through their genes without chance of error
they inbred to the point that they became deranged and disfigured
they saw that the people were happy among themselves and didn't give head to the leaders
they found that people could be herded like animals if they were made to fear, shame and guilt
